It tick’s all our boxes, it’s worked out very well for us

Meet Dorothy and Derek Thomas, a former dress designer and IT specialist, who live in our Chapelwood community located in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

When Dorothy and Derek welcomed us into their home it was really lovely to see Dorothy’s paintings all around their home. Not only did Dorothy share her passion for art and Derek's love of cricket but they have also shared their story of living abroad in Asia. 

When their two boys left home, they decided this was the perfect time for them to travel. Derek told us he took up a job offer over in Malaysia and lived there for 5 years: “this was an amazing experience we made new friends with local people who we still are in contact with today.” This was the first time they decided to rent an apartment, and when they came back home from Malaysia they decided they no longer needed a big family home as it was a lot of maintenance. “We enjoyed being in an apartment so much that the two of us didn’t entertain living in a big house with a garden.”

Derek told us: “the most important thing for us was to live in a city as we are city people and we decided Manchester was the right fit for us at this time in our lives. We enjoy eating out at restaurants, watching cricket and the transport is great, the trams are fabulous.”

After a few years, Dorothy and Derek begun considering moving, as they wanted to find a new apartment that was future proof for them both. They started looking at a few places, however one of their sons who lives in Wilmslow saw Chapelwood get built and suggested they take a look. Derek said: “When we came to visit Chapelwood and noticed all the facilities it was an easy choice.” 

When Dorothy and Derek finally decided to make the move they said it was a little easier for them to downsize to Chapelwood as they had previously downsized and lived in 4 or 5 other apartments.  

Since moving to Chapelwood 3 and a half years ago Dorothy and Derek said: “there is so little I would like to change here as everything is of high quality at Chapelwood. When we have visitors many of them say it is like a 5 star hotel.”

Dorothy and Derek went on to share what they love most about living in Chapelwood, Derek said: “it’s not just the facilities but the staff are great as they are always there to help answer any queries we may have and general day to day support, for example we can leave our keys if we are going out and about and we know our apartment is safe. It is a nice caring community, for example one of the ladies here takes Dorothy to church, some people go out walking together, and it’s brilliant as I receive my newspaper outside my door every day.” 

Dorothy goes on to say: “ I also like the independence we have and our boys are happy we are safe here with a great like-minded community around us. It tick’s all our boxes, it’s worked out very well for us, it’s a nice place.”
