Meet the team | Marie, General Manager at Latheram House and One Bayshill Road
09 March 2021
With two fast growing communities to oversee, our General Manager, Marie, for Latheram House and One Bayshill Road is one busy lady! We caught up with Marie to chat about how life is looking after these two stunning communities, located in the heart of Cheltenham.
Hi Marie, can you explain a little more about your job role?
I manage two communities, Latheram House and One Bayshill Road. I generally oversee Latheram House spending two days a week there but have more involvement with One Bayshill Road, mostly as I am located closer to the community. In general, I ensure that the communities run smoothly and encourage the Lifehosts to work to their best potential and ensure they are also happy within their own roles.
I started as a Lifehost back in December 2019 at One Bayshill Road on a full time basis, after a year in my role the opportunity arose for me to take over the managerial role which I started in January this year.
How is life at Latheram House and One Bayshill Road?
Everybody seems to be adjusting to the new way of life well, and the flexibility that has to come with these multiple lockdowns. My main role is to always provide answers to our homeowners’ questions regarding what they can and can’t do and who can visit, it’s me they come to for extra guidance.
Certainly the highlight of our week at the moment is the lovely roast dinners provided for our owners every Sunday by the Larder. These have been provided all throughout every lockdown up to this point. They have also batch cooked a selection of meals for the freezers for the owners to help themselves to. We are very keen to have them back when things start to ease up.
Another activity we have been running to keep our owners spirits high has been the book and puzzle exchange which is organised by one of our owners to alleviate the boredom. The exchange takes place in the Library and books, magazines and puzzles can be left for everyone to enjoy.
We also had a great reception to our monthly news letter which is produced by our Lifehost and includes little light hearted stories of what's been going on, riddles and recipes. It was well received by all.
Do you have any favourite features of the two communities you work for?
I really like the fishpond at Latheram House, I find myself stopping to check all the fish are still there quite often! We also have the wellness facilities at One Bayshill Road with the sauna, gym and pool which are all well used, especially in lockdown. We have had special permission to keep the facilities open for the health and wellbeing of our homeowners. We also have the lovely roof terrace which we used to use for cocktails in the summer.
What are your top recommendations for Cheltenham and the wider area?
I really enjoy the jazz festival and the science festival; I take my two children every year and it is always a big calendar event for us. Cheltenham really does have a lot to offer, it’s an extremely lively town and there is always something going on.
What do you enjoy most about living and working in the area?
I live in the Pittville area of Cheltenham but I haven’t always lived here, I actually grew up in Somerset so moving here when I was 18 felt like a big step. In fact, Cheltenham seemed like the biggest city in the world to me. I came here to study at University and I never left. Being just a 20 minute drive from the Cotswolds gives you the best of both worlds with its lovely little villages and quaint hamlets, especially when I am missing the countryside.
Do you have any plans for events and activities when lockdown lifts?
One Bayshill Road is such a wonderful space for social events but the last year has obviously been very difficult in terms of organising events and the safety of the homeowners always has to come first. But we’re certainly looking forward to hosting the evening drinks on the terrace and the coffee mornings to make the most of the wonderful communal areas once again. Similarly, Latheram House has a lovely lounge and social kitchen that we can’t wait to host social events for our homeowners in.
