Moving to your new PegasusLife home is an exciting prospect with plenty of good times ahead.

We appreciate that saying goodbye is never easy, especially if you’re leaving a family home full of memories. However, you’re not alone - the PegasusLife team is with you every step of the way.  Whether you choose to use our complimentary* moving service, or to pack and oversee the removals yourself, some positive planning will help it go smoothly. We’ve put together some top tips and ideas to help ease the transition to your new life.

The gift of time

Plan well ahead for your move by giving yourself weeks, even months, to sort out your belongings, declutter your home and pack for the moving day.

Keep a wall calendar or schedule the tasks to be done in your mobile phone calendar and set alerts. By keeping to the plan, you’ll have a better chance of achieving a smooth stress-free move to your new home - rather than facing a last-minute panic with a list of things to be done.

Remember, it took many happy years to fill your home, so emptying it will take time too.

Sort it out

Once the decision to move has been made, get a head-start by sorting out and prioritising what can be packed to take with you; which items can be given away - to family, friends or a charity shop perhaps; consider if anything is worth selling and what can be thrown away or taken to the local household waste recycling centre.

Understandably, many people find it hard to let go of their possessions, so a resilient approach and real determination to get things sorted out will certainly ease the process for you - and get help from family members too.

Think on a small scale - begin with simple spaces that need sorting out like a drawer or a closet - you’ll soon get into the swing of it. This will help the whole process appear achievable. We've put together a guide on how to declutter to help get you started.

Make some money

Having a clear-out of your old possessions may uncover items that haven’t been used for years, such as a box of vinyl records or a collection of fine china. Antiques or high-value pieces in good condition could be sold before you move. You could approach a specialist buyer, or arrange for the items to be sold at auction.

Create a keepsake box

Leaving your old home will inevitably stir up precious memories of times past. While you can certainly look forward to happy times ahead, living in new surroundings with PegasusLife, you could consider putting together a keepsake box or scrapbook as a reminder of your old home and the great times you had there.

This could involve taking photos of each of the rooms, including the garden in various seasons; You may also want to ask someone to take a photo of you outside your home before you leave, so that you can look back on this with fond memories.

Write down your happiest memories of times shared with family and friends in your old home.  Lastly, choose one or two precious tokens from your old home that has special meaning - try to keep this small in size for practicality. It may be a good idea to enlist the help of a younger family member to share this task and make it more enjoyable.

Pack strategically

Steer clear from unnecessary stress by packing strategically; avoid having to unpack and repack boxes by starting with your non-essentials first - the items you won’t need for a while, such as ornaments, books, out-of-season clothes, rarely-used cooking equipment and wall paintings or photo frames.

Just before you move, pack a separate suitcase with everything you may need during the first few days. Toiletries (including a favourite bubble bath to relax when you arrive), any medication you take regularly, nightwear, fresh clothing, phone chargers and a change of shoes - and don’t forget your toothbrush!

From the kitchen, pack a moving-in box with essentials such as a kettle, toaster, a couple of mugs, basic crockery, cutlery and washing-up provisions. A few tins of food for a quick lunch or supper, teabags and a packet of biscuits will help the move go easier too!

Finally, keep your valuables with you when you move - this could include jewellery, money, credit cards and your driving licence, mobile phone, passport and other personal documents.

Be prepared

As moving day approaches, you’ll need to step up the packing - so make sure you are prepared by getting sturdy corrugated cardboard boxes of various sizes delivered, buying bubble wrap, strong tape and self-adhesive labels and keeping old newspapers for lining boxes.

When it comes to filling them with your possessions, place more fragile items on the top, well-wrapped and protected - and put the outside of each box with an inventory of the contents and mark as fragile. Don't completely fill large boxes, as they will be too heavy to move and take care lifting them.

A fond farewell

Before you pack away all your belongings into boxes, make the parting from your old neighbours and local friends a happy one by planning a get-together at your home - it could be over morning coffee and cakes - or perhaps over wine and canapés one evening.

Look forward to catching up with them, and enjoy reminiscing over shared times past. Give them your new address and leave a pen and paper out for them all to write down their contact details if you don’t already have them.

That way, it’ll merely be ‘Au revoir’ not ‘Goodbye’ - and they can toast your new start with PegasusLife too.

New home, familiar layout

Everybody has their own style and preferences when home-making, but to help you comfortably settle into your new PegasusLife home, why not sit down with a notepad and list the furniture you plan to bring with you and allocate them to the new rooms. Your PegasusLife sales advisor can provide a floor plan of your new apartment to help you visualise where everything can go.

Treat yourself

There’s no doubt that moving can be stressful, so it’s important to remember to stay calm, and schedule in ‘me’ time to look after your health and wellbeing. This could entail a regular daily walk in the fresh air, a yoga or exercise class, swimming or meeting up with friends at a local cafe for lunch.

To help you look forward to your new PegasusLife home even more, why not treat yourself to a home-warming gift - it could be a comfy sofa, a new mattress, widescreen TV, laptop or stylish kitchen equipment. You’ve worked hard to get there - so enjoy the benefits!

A job shared

Moving is a major life event, so don’t try to do it all by yourself. Ask your friends or family members to put aside some time and pitch in to help you sort out belongings, dispose of unwanted items, lift heavy boxes and furniture and start the packing process.

Sharing the workload will not only make it easier for you, it’s also great to have a second opinion about what to keep - and somebody who doesn’t mind making you a reviving drink every so often!
