Our Life chapters: Bill Redmond

On Valentine’s Day 1962 Bill booked a little known band called ‘The Beatles’ for a party at Lewis’s, Liverpool, in the staff canteen. The agreed fee was £4 each, but they showed so much promise that Bill chose to pay them £5.

So little known were they in fact, that Bill noted them down as ‘The Beetles’ when completing the booking.

On the day of the gig itself, the group arrived at the staff entrance and Bill helped them carry their amplifiers up to the canteen on the fifth floor. The room had special wall sockets so Bill helped the band members removing plugs from their equipment and setting up new ones. Dressed in black leather the band gave a wonderful display and earned rave reviews from those in attendance.

In the following months Bill was offered a job as their roadie, but he responded with a polite ‘no thank you’. It wasn’t going to lead anywhere was it?

We’re not sure what happened to them, but Bill and his wife Christine, now live at The Vincent, a Lifestory community in the heart of Bristol - one of over 50 developments across the country.
